What's the hold up?

On the 2nd March MK Dons announced the sacking of Scott Lindsey. Without a win in eleven the board hit the panic button clearly losing faith in the former Crawley Town boss .

Fast forward to the 15th April and the Dons are still managerless, with early front runner Leam Richardson and interviewees Michael Duff and Luke Williams disappearing from the conversation.

Ex Derby County boss Paul Warne turned down the chance to take over the reigns amidst a potential move to Huddersfield Town.

Keith Andrews name then entered the frame last week with interviews held. Former England striker Wayne Rooney and current Notts County boss Stuart Maynard have also been loosely linked with the job.

The question that remains is, what’s the hold up? Any potential answers to that question remain firmly locked behind the doors of the stadium:MK board room. But there are certainly plenty of theories behind it.

In Ben Gladwin’s interview after the Gillingham defeat he was asked whether there was any update on a new manager coming in and gave the response, “not that I’ve heard, but I'm sure one will be in next week”.

From an outside perspective the uncertainty in this answer simply adds to the growing frustration amongst supporters.

Maybe the club is not the attractive proposition it once was in years gone by. Or the board are not selling the club to potential candidates with enough conviction.

It could be said that the club has somewhat lost it’s identity honing in on promotion from league two without considering the long term. Yes results were poor under Scott Lindsey but you also have to take into account the task he had put in front of him. The squad size certainly didn’t do him any favours. A smaller, tight knit group would have created more togetherness and reduced any potential unrest amongst players who can’t get a game.

As much as I’m sure many would disagree I still believe Scott Lindsey was the right man for the job. Lets face it, I don’t think we’d be doing any worse right now if he had stayed. Reality is whoever comes in is going to need at least one more transfer window to further trim the squad and add some quality in certain positions.

Stability is the only thing that will return this club to better times. From an outside point of view any potential new coach might be put off having seen an accomplished coach like Lindsey so swiftly axed. This is the real reason supporters should be frustrated with Liam Sweeting and his team. Lets not forget it took Karl Robinson several seasons to develop the club to a level where promotion to the Championship was possible.

It is vital that anyone coming into the club is given time to build and aligns with the club’s vision. On top of that Liam Sweeting could do with making a press release outlining exactly what that is. The fans deserve clarity on the current situation their club is in.

Like I mentioned before the summer window and plans for the squad are a key talking point prior to any appointment.

With that said the frightening thing is a lot of this squad are under contract for next season. And right now are hardly putting themselves in the shop window should they want to leave or playing for the shirt to be considered by the new manager.

MK Dons currently have the third most expensive squad in the league, valued at £5.41 million. Based on the current squad, this is money poorly spent. Take into account the club now have billionaire owners it is vital that the scouting network is heavily invested in. Another factor that could help lure in a new head coach.
