League One survival

About

Part of Paul Tisdale’s League Two promotion winning team. Martin took over after a poor start to the league one campaign.

The MK way was redefined and enhanced by Russell Martins heavily possession based style. During his twenty month tenure the club ranked third for possession in Europe behind only Barcelona and Manchester City respectively. Also, let’s not forget that record 56 pass goal against Gillinghsm scored by former Championship promotion winner Will Grigg.

The ex Scotland international was probably the first manager since Karl Robinson left to make MK Dons an attractive place to come and play your football again.

Ultimately he promised a project and jumped ship when the first opportunity to manage higher presented itself. Robinson turned down opportunities like this and stayed.

Third placed finish in League One

About

A great player in his hey day and the second biggest name in football to coach the club behind Paul Ince.

Di Matteo's side played expansive, attractive football utilising the wings to stretch the pitch and get forward quickly.

The Italian led his side to a third place finish behind Peterborough United and Leicester City. They went on to lose their play off semi final vs Scunthorpe United on penalties in sudden death as Tore Andre Flo crashed his spot kick against the bar.

Albeit an impressive campaign in which the Dons heavily over achieved. The ex Chelsea midfielder had a shoe string budget to work with and had lost key midfielders Lloyd Dyer and Keith Andrews from the league two title winning side of the season before.

League Two promotion

About

Brought in for his experience and know how at league two level, delivered despite a nerve wracking final day of the season at home to Mansfield Town.

Unfortunately this was as good as it got under Tisdale. After making a poor start to life back in league one the club parted ways with the ex grecians stalwart.

What made Tisdale’s spell impressive was the way he managed to come in and gain instant success under the heat of expectation.
